Making your own CBD butter is a labor of love, but if you’re a chef at heart, you won’t mind putting in the work. If you’re less of a chef and more of a foodie, there’s also a much easier recipe you can follow that will have you eating CBD butter in just a few minutes.

Do You Have To Use CBD With Food?

Sometimes, people take their supplements or their multivitamins with food. CBD is a wellness supplement you can take with or without food. 

CBD is best absorbed by your body when you eat it with a healthy fat source, like avocado, nuts, or olive oil. CBD oil already comes suspended in oil, so it’s self-sustaining. A little bit of extra healthy fat won’t hurt. 

Products like CBD gummies or CBD isolate crystals will work better if you use them before you eat a meal. They’ll get a head start on the digestive process and eventually meet up with healthy fats in your digestive system.

How To Make CBD Butter From Scratch

It Starts With Hemp

The first step in making CBD butter is getting a high-CBD strain of hemp. You can buy dried and cured hemp flowers from a hemp dispensary.

Knowing the percentage of CBD per gram of hemp flower is essential. Hemp flower with 20 percent CBD will have 200 mg of CBD per gram. 

Most edibles are 25 mg of CBD per serving. To make eight servings of edibles, you’ll need to set up the proper ratio. That would be one gram of hemp for every eight servings of butter.

But wait! There’s more. You need to ensure the amount of butter going into a recipe will contain the appropriate amount of CBD. If you’re making a tray of 16 brownies, you’ll need to use two grams of hemp to infuse the amount of butter you need to make the recipe. 

If you already know what you’ll make with your CBD-infused butter, start with the amount of butter you need for the recipe and work backward. 

Decarboxylate Your Hemp

You can’t infuse hemp directly into butter. The CBD in hemp flower hasn’t yet been “activated,” so to speak. The CBD is only the potential amount of CBD. 

It starts as CBDA, or cannabidiolic acid. It only becomes cannabidiol, or CBD, when the carboxylic acid burns off. 

This process is formally called decarboxylation. Most people who cook with hemp refer to it as decarbing. That’s what you need to do to get your hemp ready to use. 

You need an oven to decarb your hemp, and you need to be sure the oven temperature is correct. Hemp will decarb between 220 and 240 degrees Fahrenheit. 

If the heat is too high, the hemp will burn, and its CBD will burn off. If you don’t have an oven thermometer, now would be a great time to get one. 

After you begin preheating your oven, it’s time to grind your hemp. You can use an herb or coffee grinder to break your hemp into small pieces. If the pieces are too big, the CBD inside won’t decarboxylate. The tiny pieces will burn to a crisp in the oven if they're too small. Aim for pieces similar in size to grains of rice. 

Lay a sheet of aluminum foil down on a baking pan. You can protect your hemp from scalding against the baking sheet if you crinkle the aluminum foil. Sprinkle the ground hemp in an even layer and loosely cover it with another sheet of aluminum foil.

Put your hemp in the oven for about 30 minutes. Check it every five minutes after the 20-minute mark to ensure it’s not burning. Your hemp should go from bright green to a golden olive green color. You never want it to turn dark brown. 

Let your hemp cool on the counter. It’s now decarboxylated! 

Infuse Your Hemp Into Butter

The easiest way to infuse hemp into butter is to use a slow cooker. Place your desired amount of butter in a slow cooker on the lowest heat setting. Let it slowly melt. Drop in your decarbed hemp when the butter is melted and stir it well. Let it cook for four to six hours, stirring every 30 minutes.

When it’s done, use a cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to remove the hemp pieces from the slow cooker. Pour the butter into a refrigerator-safe container. It should keep nicely in the fridge for several weeks.

Don’t store it in a margarine or butter container if you live with other people. Store it in a different container that’s clearly labeled. This will prevent people from inadvertently eating the CBD butter you worked so hard to make. 

How To Make Vegan CBD Butter

If you’re vegan, allergic to dairy, lactose intolerant, or even if you just don’t like butter, you can still make CBD butter at home. You’ll just need to swap out the butter for something that will work with your diet or lifestyle. 

You can follow all the above steps, but substitute butter with coconut oil or vegan ghee. Coconut oil works great for dessert recipes where you wouldn’t mind a little coconut flavor. You can also use it to make Thai-inspired savory dishes.

Vegan ghee is a lot more versatile and doesn’t have a distinct taste, which gives it many more culinary applications. You can spread it on toast or use it to top a sweet potato. It tastes, looks, and works a lot like dairy butter. 

Is There an Easier Way To Make CBD Infused Butter?

Take a stick of butter. Place it in a microwave-safe bowl and heat the butter in 30-second increments until it's completely melted. 

Get your bottle of CBD oil, and put a few droppers full of oil into your butter. Stir it together and transfer the butter into a refrigerator-safe container, or grab a lid for your microwave-safe bowl. Let the butter sit out on the counter until it completely cools. Cover it and put it in the fridge.
